Hit a pothole? Make them fix it — and pay for it.
PotholeClaim finds the government office responsible for that road, puts them on notice, and builds your damage claim — the way TurboTax does your taxes.
Free to report & notify. You only pay when you file a claim.
Three steps, start to filed.
You point at the pothole. We do the paperwork, the deadlines, and the notice.
Report the pothole
Drop a pin where it happened. We instantly identify who owns that road — your town, the county, or a state authority.
We notify the road owner
PotholeClaim emails an official Road Defect Notice to the responsible clerk on your behalf — and keeps a dated, on-file record that it was sent.
File your claim
We generate the correct claim form, pre-filled, with your prior-notice evidence bundled in and the filing deadline tracked. Sign and submit.
“The investigation focuses on whether the entity had prior notice of the dangerous condition. If you don’t pierce the prior-notice threshold, your claim will be denied.” — NJ Treasury, Division of Risk Management
Most people lose these claims because they can’t prove the government already knew. PotholeClaim is built around that one fact.
- Every report is on the record. Notices go out with a dated, verifiable trail — for you and for the next driver who hits it.
- Right office, right form. Municipal, county, and state roads each go to the correct claims channel — no dead ends.
- The 90-day clock is handled. Miss New Jersey’s deadline by a day and you forfeit everything. We track it for you.
Reporting is free. You pay to file.
Report a pothole and put the road owner on notice at no cost. Pay only when you’re ready to file an actual damage claim.

Good to know.
Is PotholeClaim a law firm or legal advice?
No. PotholeClaim is a self-help tool that helps you prepare and organize your own documents. It is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, and using it doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship. For advice about your specific situation, talk to a licensed New Jersey attorney.
What does the notice actually do?
It’s an official, dated Road Defect Notice sent to the office responsible for that road, telling them a hazard was reported. It creates a record that the entity had notice — which is exactly what claims turn on. It is an informational courtesy notice, not your statutory notice of claim.
Which roads are covered?
All 565 New Jersey municipalities and 21 counties, plus state authorities like NJDOT and the Turnpike Authority. Each type routes to its correct claims channel. New Jersey is our pilot — more states are coming, one at a time.
What if I’m the first to report this pothole?
You can still file — and you should. By reporting it, you create the official record that protects you and everyone who hits it after you.
Do you guarantee I’ll get paid?
No one can. Whether a claim is accepted or paid is up to the government entity. What PotholeClaim does is make sure your claim is complete, on the right form, backed by prior-notice evidence, and filed on time — the things that give it the best chance.
Stop eating the cost of bad roads.
Report the pothole that got you, put the road owner on notice, and file your claim — right from your phone.
